In summer it is dark with a white throat and undertail, gray spots on the belly and breast. In winter, the belly and shoulder feathers (unlike lyurik) are white. Behind the eye there is a thin white stripe, at the base of the beak there are white feathers, in summer there is a short black outgrowth above the beak. The flight is more maneuverable than that of other Chistyakovs, flocks from a distance resemble a mosquito swarm.
Breeds in separate colonies in Eastern Chukotka, the Sea of Okhotsk, in particular, on Verkhoturov Island in Karginsky Bay, on Ushishir Islands in the middle of the Kuriles. Winters from Commander to the Southern Kuriles and Northern Primorye. The voice is a quiet chirping.
